The Brook Dried Up

1 Kings 17:2-7
2 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 3 "Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 4 And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there."
5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook. 7 And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.
NKJV

Two Lessons we draw from the above experience of Elijah:

1. Whenever we obey and put into practice the word of God we see God's promises coming true. Elijah enjoyed the promise that God made as he ate from the Ravens and drank from the Brook however, he was not immune from problems. Though one may walk in the right path it does not mean he will be exempted from problems. Elijah had a problem: the bread was there but the water had dried up. Couldn't God continue to provide for Him as He did before? Couldn't God cause water to continue flowing only in the brook as He did in the desert for the Israelites? These are among questions we ask when we go through difficult moments we didn't expect BECAUSE " we are always striving to do what is right" or at times righteous in our own eyes. But why God allowed the Brook to dry up? Because Elijah was DYING! this takes us to the second lesson of the verse above.

2. You see as long as God kept giving Elijah his daily food, Elijah would enter into something called AUTOMATIC state.Whilst eating and drinking in the brook, he had no need to use his faith. God was doing everything for him. Isn't this what many wish for? to pray and whatever they asked for to come quickly down? For God provide all their needs without them having to..not even to lift up a finger? I ask you, what will be the need of having Faith then? In the AUTOMATIC state Elijah was DYING. He was DYING in his FAITH. He would be that person who expects to reap without planting any seed using his own faith. God allowed the brook to dry up in order to revive the FAITH of Elijah. Today God allows CHALLENGES, OBSTACLES, DISAPPOINTMENTS- which by the way are created by others; DIFFICULTIES in order to revive our faith so we can always draw near Him. He does not create these problems for us but He allows them so as we USE our FAITH knowing that without faith we can never maintain a good relationship with Him.

May God give you the wisdom and strength to never complain or give up when challenges come but to develop and draw near Him as you conquer all those challenges along your path.
